What is TestMaster?
|
|
TestMaster is a software package, developed by INDUS
SYSTEMS, that enables you to design various types of tests
in the Windows environment. You can also maintain a database
of users who are taking these tests and the grades obtained
by them are stored in the database from which transcripts
can be generated.
TestMaster provides a syntax-free environment that
does not interact with the subject matter. It does not matter
whether you are designing tests in philosophy or in computer
science; TestMaster can be used with the same level
of comfort.
TestMaster is a vital tool for schools, colleges,
universities, training providers and every organization interested
in training and testing. It eliminates countless hours spent
in manual designing and grading of examinations.

|
Functionality
|
|
TestMaster recognizes three types of users depending
on their functions, namely, TestMakers, TestTakers
and TestManagers. The system is divided into three
modules with the same names so that each module supports the
corresponding users. The functions of each user and the corresponding
module are shown below.
|
 |
| |
|
TestMaker is responsible for designing tests. The
TestMaker module is used to maintain tests. It provides the
ability to list, add, edit and delete tests such that each
test could have an unlimited number of questions.
TestTaker goes through the test and marks answers
to questions. The TestTaker module also accumulates the grades
and keeps track of the elapsed time.
TestManager is responsible for scheduling tests and
generating reports. The TestManager module also compiles transcripts.
|
| |
| System Architecture |
| TestMaster has been design under 32-bit Windows Operating
System. The front-end has been written in Visual Basic. The
low-volume back-end is normally provided by Microsoft Access
database. The back-end for a transaction-intensive configuration
could be provided by Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server. If your
system demands a high volume of remote access, you may consider
Citrix Winframe platform. |

|
Setting up User Types
|
|
The system provides full security support so that it does
not allow anyone to enter the system without loging in with
a User ID and a Password. The system has a built-in user called
ADMIN with no password and all the rights.
|
 |
|
Each user has a User Type. The system comes with a built-in
user type called Administrator with all privileges. The user
ADMIN has user type Administrator. Each user can have one
or more of the following rights: TestMaker, TestTaker, TestManager,
User Maintenance and User Type Maintenance. You may define
additional user types with proper privileges., user type Professor
with TestMaker and TestTaker previliges, user type Student
with TestTaker privilege only and user type Clerk with TestManager
and User Maintenance privileges.
When the system is installed, you may log in as ADMIN. Leave
the password blank. At this point you may change the password
for ADMIN and define additional users with proper user types.
|
| |
| Maintaining User Database |
| The TestManager sets up a record for each TestTaker
as a user. A link could be built to your students or employees
database so that you do not have to set up a separate user database
in the TestMaster itself. Consult with INDUS SYSTEMS
for advice. |

| |
| Designing a Test |
|
Designing a test is a simple job. Set up a Test ID, enter
a description, choose a category (and if the category does
not exist, define it), define all the sections that the test
will contain and enter a time limit for the test in minutes.
|
 |
| A test can contain unlimited number of questions. Switch to
the Questions / Answers section of the screen and enter all
questions. Also enter all answers for each question and click
the correct answer. The test is now ready to be administered. |
 |
| |
| Administering a Test |
|
The TestManager schedules tests for each student (TestTaker).
When the student logs in giving user id and the password,
the system displays a list of tests scheduled for the student
and the test being taken can be chosen from the list. Once
the test is completed the score is stored in the database.
A test can be taken only once It is not possible for a student
to repeat a test unless the TestManager cancels the previous
result.
|
 |
| |
|
Taking a Test
|
|
Taking a test is simple. The screen displays a question and
a list of possible answers. The user clicks the right answers.
It is possible to go back and forth over the questions. The
user may even leave out some questions in case they wish to
go back to them. Howeven, once an answer is clicked one cannot
change the answer.
The screen also displays the time allowed for the test and
does not permit the user to mark any more answers after the
time has expired.
|
 |
| |
|
Managing Test Results
|
|
The TestManager is responsible for printing test history
and student transcripts and also schedules and cancels tests
as required.
|
 |
| |
| TestMaster as a Training Tool |
| The TestManager may provide a test either in the test
mode or in the training mode. In the test mode the system does
not display the correct answer. It just shows the final grade
and stores it in the database. In the training mode the system
displays whether the answer was right or wrong. It also displays
the correct answer. The user may click the Explanation button
to display the rationale for correct answer. It is possible
to enter several pages of narration for each question. This
allows TestMaster to be used as a tool for programmed study. |
